A Life Changing Choice

A Life Changing Choice
by Aiziel S. Roda (December 2010)

Your choices today will determine what you will become tomorrow.
Life is never easy. Indeed, it is full of uncertainties, much more of choices which will bear either abundances or consequences. Still and yet, if you manage to see things in a constructive way, may it be good or worse; you will see yourself becoming better and wiser. Just like in accounting, it is made up of stuffs you sometimes could not bear to comprehend, for even multiple choices during examinations won’t definitely guarantee you to hit the right answer thus, leading to confusions, worries, and fears. However, in the end you will be able to see things clearer and easier enabling you to solve each question correctly, if you’ll just give the best of what you can, offer the most of what you could afford and particularly if you do not lose heart that whatever may happen “smile japon!”.
A life of an accountancy student seems like a tale in which instructors are liken into genius creatures whose superpowers can effortlessly manage all gigantic blizzards which are liken into accounting problems and the students are like tiny little buds who were just about to bloom when the roaring thunder began to commence. However, despite the odds, these supernatural creatures continue to nurture the buds until it sprang and become beautiful flowers. This makes the life of accountancy students in the University of Mindanao far more different from those of the others. Though it contains countless adversities, the students are rest assured to be able to stand, be on their best and become somebody through the help and guidance of their mentors.
Being a BSA Student is not just all about dreams. It is about hope, willpower and optimism which blossoms from deep within. It is not just about crashing numbers but also of having the virtue of patience and perseverance considering things beyond you can ever grasp.  It is more of hardships and challenges but much more of delight and fulfillment each time you encounter and solve accounting problems, accordingly, making into reality that when there's no pain, there will be no gain. However, it is matter of choice. As you choose the profession, there should be no turning back as you make yourself prepared for all the obstacles that will come along the way. Though it takes much courage to do so, the fire of determination which continues to burn even more will be the guiding light that will definitely carry you through.

I for one have my own struggles. Definitely, it is neither simple nor trouble-free to live and make friends with accounting terminologies in just a twinkling of an eye. It is not that easy to make all those things be part of your system all at once. But there’s no escape at all and the least you can do is to learn how to live with these principles and if you do, you’ll certainly be able to take hold and eventually appreciate the beauty of these standards. Just like what my accounting 5 teachers once said, “Technically, you need to embrace pressure, for it is part of your life as you learn and become who you wanted to be. You need to get used to it as it is part of learning and if you do, you’ll certainly enjoy every single thing on it.” However, appreciation is more than just what it really is. It is the fruit of acceptance that there is no such thing as perfection for even perfection itself has its own limit.
I once asked myself, “Why did I choose Accountancy?” Honestly, during my first few days in college I never knew what debit and credit is all about. But one thing is for certain, though I don’t have the ample knowledge about what Accountancy and accounting is during those times, deep within my heart I can hear a still small voice whispering, Accountancy…Accountancy…Accountancy. I have chosen this profession not because others want it for me but because my heart keeps on telling me so. However, the journey towards reaching my goal is not that easy. The road is rough and the going is tough. How could I ever forget those tears which flooded out from my eyes during those times when pressure is overwhelming. How could I ever forget those sleepless nights and the first time I got a failing mark on my examination. Things got worst; I had grown so weak and I actually felt I had enough and maybe it’s time to give up. But on the other side of the coin, my family’s love and support, until now, serve as my motivation to continue and accomplish whatever it is that I had already started. Truly, why should I relinquish that easy if I have not even given my best shot? Just as what Clinton Howell wrote on one of his poems, Life is queer with its twists and turns, and things go wrong as they sometimes will and the road you’re trudging sometimes seems all uphill. But you must stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit; it’s when things seem worst that you mustn’t quit.
With that in mind, things changed so does my perception in life. Indeed, I struggled a lot and it really took time until I finally realized that there’s no such thing as  failure but quitting the race all because you once stumbled and fell or somehow you were just too afraid to take the risk. Moreover, it certainly is a great relief to know that God has allowed things to happen in our lives to build us up and not to tear us down and that He won’t let us be into such a situation without any purpose. As it is, “We must not blame the mountain for being too high to climb but instead we must find ways on how are we going to climb it.” For not being able to make things possible at first doesn’t mean you can never make it at all. Failure is never an excuse but instead it’s an avenue for growth and another step closer to the cathedral of success. That is how accounting brought change into my life. For the learnings I had in the University are not just purely academics, but also wisdom and knowledge which in fact, had transformed me as to who and what I am now.
I know for some reason that we all have given up something. Some were forced to be away from home and others worked for them to go to school. Some even went to school starving but still managed to do so. Whatever it is that we have given up; time, effort, money and a lot more, we willingly hand it down all for one thing and that is for us to become someone we all wanted to become.
Much more to say, the sacrifices we made, so does the sacrifices of our parents should never be wasted. Our labor will not be in vain if we will not give up on our faith. For success never comes by mere fate, it’s a matter of choice we all need to decide and act upon. So, never stop nor lose hope for the price is already all set to those who will be able to make it until the end as we continue to hitch our wagon to the stars until we hit the mark and finally see ourselves standing at the pinnacle of success.
